Reasons to Raise

Top three reasons to raise an FSD puppy with a purpose

Puppy raising—it’s fun, it’s fulfilling, and it’s a great way to help people in need!

At FSD, we’re always looking for compassionate volunteers to help us raise the next generation Freedom Service Dogs! Every year, we welcome more and more puppies into our assistance dog training program—and every single one of these precious pups needs a volunteer puppy raiser to help them reach their full potential.

Our puppies range from 2 to 4 months old, with some already house trained and crate trained. As an FSD puppy raiser, your role involves showering an FSD puppy with love, continuing their basic obedience training, instilling good manners, and facilitating socialization for 2 to 14 months. In return, FSD provides the food, supplies, veterinary care, special training, and ongoing support.

Not only is raising rewarding and fun, but it also leaves a lasting impact in the lives of people challenged by disabilities. There are boundless reasons why you should consider becoming an FSD puppy raiser, but here are just a few!

1. You’ll become an everyday game changer

Puppy raising for FSD is a unique opportunity to make a huge difference in the lives of people with disabilities. By guiding our smallest service dogs in training, you’ll have a hand in creating a renewed sense of independence and hope for one of the many individuals on our waiting list.

2. Because puppies!

Time spent with a puppy is never wasted! Once you’re paired with a tiny service dog hopeful, you’ll have the exciting opportunity to welcome a furry bundle of joy into your home for 2 to 14 months. Most puppies will already have their basic obedience skills down, and you’ll be paid in full with tons of tail wags and puppy kisses!

3. You’ll be a part of the FSD community

Puppy raising is a great way to make friends and meet new people. As an FSD volunteer, you’ll be introduced to a welcoming community of dog lovers who want to make a difference in the lives of people with disabilities and are happy to provide you with support and guidance along the way.
